The Union Public Service Commission has officially released the ESE 2027 notification for the engineering graduates. This year, notification was announced on 16 September 2026, and 480 vacancies have been announced across various disciplines such as civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics and telecommunications engineering. The UPSC ESE 2027 prelims examination will be conducted on 31 January 2027. UPSC ESE Vacancy 2027 

This year, UPSC announced 480 vacancies under various engineering disciplines, i.e., civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronics and telecommunication engineering.

It includes 19 vacancies for the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) (11 vacancies for Locomotor Disability, including Leprosy-cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy and 06 vacancies for Hard of Hearing, 01 vacancy for Low Vision and 01 vacancy for SLD and MD). 

The number of vacancies is liable to alteration. Reservations will be made for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Weaker Sections and Persons with Benchmark the disability category in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the government of India.

UPSC ESE Eligibility Criteria 

1. The candidates must have completed the bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology from the recognised university/institute. Eligible streams for ESE exam are civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunication engineering.
2. Final-year students are eligible for appearing in the exam, but admission will depend on submitting the proof of the requisite qualifying examination.
3. Admission of a candidate who has passed an examination conducted by other institutions or has a degree from a foreign university not recognised by the Government will be at the discretion of the Commission.
4. The candidate must be a citizen of the following countries: India, Nepal or bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who has migrated to India on or before 31 January 1962, intending to permanently settle in India, or Indian-origin personnel who have migrated from Pakistan, Burmal, Sri Lanka or East African countries such as Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam to permanently settle in India.
5. The candidate must be 21 years and not more than 30 years of age. Age relaxation is provided to the reserved category candidates.
6. There is no limit to the number of attempts taken by the candidates under the ESE exam

Candidates (except Female/SC/ST/PwBD who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200/- (Rupees Two Hundred only) either by using net banking facility of any bank or by using a Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card/UPI Payment for appearing in the Engineering Services Examination, 2027.

ESE Selection Process

The ESE exam consists of three stages, i.e., the prelims examination, the mains examination and the personality test. 

1. Stage 1 – Preliminary examination: It consists of two papers, i.e., paper 1 and paper 2. Paper 1 is General Studies and Engineering Aptitude with 200 marks and 2 hours. Paper 2 is engineering-specific, worth 300 marks and of 3 hours. This examination is an objective-based examination. 
2. Stage 2 – Mains examination: The candidates who qualify for the preliminary examination are called to write the mains examination. It is a descriptive examination consisting of two papers relevant to their chosen stream. This paper tests the in-depth knowledge about technical subjects through conventional answer writing.
3. Stage 3- Personality test: The candidates who qualify for the Mains examination need to appear for the interview or personality test in which technical knowledge, leadership qualities, decision-making skills and communication skills are tested. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of scores obtained in the mains and Interview.
