Dear Students,
The GATE 2026 Statistical and Performance Report, released by IIT Guwahati, provides valuable insights into the Scale of competition, candidate participation, qualification rates, cut-offs and performance across different papers. Having been closely associated with GATE and ESE preparation for more than two decades, I believe such data should not be viewed merely as statistics. A careful analysis can help students understand the level of competition, set realistic yet ambitious targets, and plan their preparation more effectively.
For this MADE EASY analysis, I have focused on ten engineering-oriented papers of direct relevance to our students i.e. CS, EC, CE, DA, EE, ME, IN, XE, ES and PI.

1. Participation and Performance in 10 Major Engineering Streams
While GATE offers tests across 30 disciplines, these ten primary engineering papers account for 75.5% of total registrations, 76.3% of all appearances and 74.3% of all qualifications reported in GATE 2026. The table below provides a detailed breakdown of candidates registered, appeared, qualified, qualification rates, and highest marks of these 10 major papers:
2. Social Category-wise Details (Registered/Appeared/Qualified)
The below table outlines the demographic distribution and inclusivity across major disciplines across General (GEN), General-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST categories for key papers. It provides breakdown of candidate participation across social categories. Marked as registered (R), appeared (A), and qualified (Q).
3. Cut-Off Marks and Highest Scores
A common mistake made by GATE candidates is confusing the qualifying cut-off score with a target score for admission or selection. The qualifying cut-off merely represents the threshold to obtain a valid GATE scorecard, whereas securing an IIT seat or PSU call requires scores significantly higher than the cut-off. Among these papers, ME recorded the highest maximum mark at 96.97. Instrumentation Engineering had the highest GEN qualifying cut-off at 39.8, followed by PI at 36.0 and XE at 35.2.

These are paper-wise aggregates, not necessarily unique individuals, because eligible candidates may register for more than one permitted GATE paper.
5. Key Observations for Students and Teachers

Massive Exam Scale:
GATE 2026 crossed 10.11 lakh registrations (10,11,719), marking a +50.9% growth compared to 2023. Out of all applicants, 7,97,434 candidates appeared (78.82% appearance rate).

Striking Fact:
Across the 5 core engineering streams (CE, ME, EE, EC, CS), 81.0% of candidates (4,11,872 out of 5,08,570) failed to qualify. This shows why quality teaching matters.

CS dominates participation:
CS/IT remains the single largest stream with 2.59+ lakh aspirants. Due to the high candidate volume, CS was conducted in two separate sessions with normalization. The total no. of registrations was 2,59,922 and 2,11,020 appeared for the paper.

DA has become a major GATE paper:
With 91,764 registrations, DA has quickly positioned itself alongside core engineering streams in terms of candidate volume.

Qualification remains selective:
Only 19.10% of candidates who appeared across these ten selected papers qualified.

High Passing percentage papers:
Specialized paper like IN, ES and PI showed qualification rates above 21%. IN (22.72%), ES (22.24%) and PI (21.92%) qualification rate was higher compared with CS (19.27%).

CS and CE were conducted in two sessions:
The report notes that CS and CE were multi-session papers due to high candidate volume, with normalization applied.

Cut-off is not a target score:
Qualifying cutoffs (ranging between 25.2 – 39.8 across major streams) only provide a valid scorecard. Since the highest score was 96.67 (ME), therefore for securing a competitive post-graduate admissions or a PSU call aim far beyond mere qualifying marks.
A Message for Aspirants
The most important lesson from the GATE 2026 data is that qualifying GATE and securing a high GATE rank are two very different goals. Students should not prepare merely to cross the qualifying cut-off. The focus should remain on conceptual clarity, repeated revision, previous-year questions, quality mock tests, accuracy and systematic analysis of mistakes.
GATE rewards disciplined and consistent preparation. The numbers may change every year, but the fundamentals of success remain the same.
