Nickel :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Increases toughness and resistance to impact<\/li>\n<li>Acts as graphitizer<\/li>\n<li>Lowers the critical temperatures of steel and widens the range of successful heat treatment<\/li>\n<li>Improves fatigue strength.<\/li>\n<li>Renders high-chromium iron alloys austenitic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3. Chromium :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Joins with carbon to form chromium carbide, thus adds to depth hardenability with improved resistance to abrasion and wear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4. Silicon :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Improves oxidation resistance<\/li>\n<li>Acts as a deoxidizer<\/li>\n<li>Strengthens low <a href=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/me\/engineering-materials\/common-alloy-steels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alloy steels<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Promotes graphitization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5. Titanium :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Forms hard and stable carbide and raises creep strength.<\/li>\n<li>Prevents formation of austenite in high chromium steels<\/li>\n<li>Reduces martensitic hardness and hardenability in medium chromium steels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6. Molybdenum :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Promotes hardenability of steel<\/li>\n<li>Makes steel fine grained<\/li>\n<li>Makes steel unusually tough at various hardness levels<\/li>\n<li>Counteracts tendency towards temper brittleness<\/li>\n<li>Raises tensile and creep strength at high temperatures<\/li>\n<li>Enhances corrosion resistance in stainless steels<\/li>\n<li>Forms abrasion resisting particles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>7. Vanadium :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Promotes fine grains in steel<\/li>\n<li>Increases hardenability (when dissolved)<\/li>\n<li>Imparts strength and toughness to heat-treated steel<\/li>\n<li>Forms carbides and nitrides<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>8. Tungsten :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Increases hardness (and also red-hardness)<\/li>\n<li>Promotes fine grain<\/li>\n<li>Promotes strength at elevated temperatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>9. Manganese :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Contributes markedly to strength and hardness (but to a lesser degree than carbon)<\/li>\n<li>Counteracts brittleness from sulphur<\/li>\n<li>Lowers both ductility and weldability if it is present in high percentage with high carbon content in steel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>10. Copper :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Copper causes precipitation hardening when exceeds 0.3%.<\/li>\n<li>Increases resistance to atmospheric corrosion<\/li>\n<li>Acts as a strengthening agent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>11. Boron :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Increases hardenability or depth to which steel will harden when quenched.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>12. Aluminium :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Acts as a deoxidizer<\/li>\n<li>Produces fine austenitic grain size<\/li>\n<li>If present in an amount of about 1%, it helps in promoting nitriding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>13. Cobalt :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Contributes to red-hardness by hardening ferrite<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Improves mechanical properties such as tensile strength, fatigue strength and hardness<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Refines the graphite and pearlite<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Retards the transformation of austenite and thus increases hardenability and freedom from cracking and distortion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
