{"id":4965,"date":"2025-07-19T11:54:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T06:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/?p=4965"},"modified":"2025-07-19T11:54:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T06:24:19","slug":"burgers-vector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.madeeasy.in\/study\/me\/engineering-materials\/burgers-vector","title":{"rendered":"Burger&#8217;s Vector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burger vector is defined as the vector which indicate direction and magnitude of displacement of dislocation within a lattice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burger&#8217;s vectors are measured as interatomic distance between two atoms.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dislocation moves on slip plane only.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burger&#8217;s vector of an edge dislocation is perpendicular to dislocation line.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burger&#8217;s vector of an screw dislocation is parallel to screw dislocation line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Interaction between dislocations<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In cold working (which occurs due to slipping of planes) materials there are millions and billions dislocations.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>When two opposite type of edge dislocations travel towards each other on the same closed packed plane, they attract each other and combine into a perfect plane.<\/li>\n<li>When two opposite type of edge dislocations move towards each other on parallel slip planes, a group of vacancies are formed between them.<\/li>\n<li>When two similar type of edge dislocations move towards each other on the same slip plane, they repel each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Burger&#8217;s vector defines the strength of dislocation. To get a clear picture, draw a Burger circuit on the atomic plane enclosing an edge dislocation. Start from the undistorted region and move in steps of length of atomic spacing \u2018a\u2019 of the lattice, and form a closed loop, crossing the dislocation as well, reach the starting point.<br \/>\nFrom the figure it is seen that the Burger\u2019s circuit closes perfectly in the lattice arrangement without dislocation whereas, fails to close in lattice with dislocations, and closes by moving an extra step \u2018b\u2019.
