shown in given figure.<br \/>\nHere,<br \/>\n\u03c3t = Tensile stress in weld<br \/>\nP = Tensile force on the plates (N)<br \/>\nh = Throat of Butt weld<br \/>\nt = Thickness of plate<br \/>\nl = Length of weld<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u03c3t = P\/hl<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because reinforcement is provided to compensate for flaws in the weld, equating throat of the weld \u2018h\u2019 to the plate thickness \u2018t\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4910 aligncenter\" weld (size of weld)<br \/>\nt = Throat (it is the minimum cross-section of weld at 45\u00b0 to leg)<br \/>\nl = Length of weld<br \/>\nt = h cos (45\u00b0)<br \/>\nt = 0.707 h (for right-angle triangle with two equal side)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Generally the leg length \u2018h\u2019 is equal to the plate thickness.Because failure of the fillet weld occurs due to shear along the minimum cross-section of the weld.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Permissible shear stress, \u03c4max = P\/tl = P\/ 0.707hl<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If there are two welds of equal length on two equal side of vertical plate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u03c4max = P\/ 1.414hl<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As per American Welding Society (AWS), permissible shear stress for fillet weld is 94 N\/mm2 in case of static load.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"iii-Strength-of-Transverse-Fillet-Weld\"><\/span>(iii) Strength of Transverse Fillet Weld<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A transverse fillet
