Though there are other losses also such as loss due to bend, pipe fittings, loss at the entrance of penstock etc., yet they are having small magnitude as compared to head loss due to friction.<\/li>\n<li>If \u2018h<sub>f<\/sub>\u2019 is the head loss due to friction between penstocks and water, then net head on turbine is given by<br \/>\nH = H<sub>g<\/sub> \u2013 h<sub>f<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3078 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/penstock.jpg\" alt=\"Penstock\" width=\"278\" height=\"126\" \/><\/sub><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PELTON-TURBINE\"><\/span>PELTON TURBINE<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Pelton turbine is a tangential flow impulse turbine having high head low discharge turbine.<\/li>\n<li>Water coming from the nozzle impinges on the bucket attached to the shaft of turbine which causes force on bucket. The force creates torque necessary for rotation for shaft.<\/li>\n<li>All the head is converted to kinetic head before the jet impinges on the bucket.<\/li>\n<li>Water is always in contact with atmosphere. Hence throughout its operation water is at atmospheric pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Components-of-Pelton-turbine\"><\/span>Components of Pelton turbine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The components of Pelton turbine are as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Nozzle and Governor <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3079 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/nozzle.jpg\" alt=\"Nozzle\" width=\"284\" height=\"145\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>To control the discharge passing through the nozzle and striking the bucket, a spear is provided which can move forward or backward with the help of governor in order to decrease or increase the flow through nozzle respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Governor and spear helps in meeting the variable demand of power and thus maintains the speed of the wheel constant even when head varies.<\/li>\n<li>When speed of the wheel increases, the spear is pushed into the nozzle thereby reducing the quantity of water striking the bucket. If the speed of the wheel falls, the spear is withdrawn back allowing a greater quantity of water to pass through nozzle.<\/li>\n<li>The process of maintaining constant speed in respective of change in load is called governing of hydraulic turbine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Runner or Buckets <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3082 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/pelton-turbine.jpg\" alt=\"Pelton Turbine\" width=\"258\" height=\"187\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Pelton turbine consists buckets mounted on the runner. Each bucket is divided into two parts by a splitter\u00a0 which has a sharp edge at the centre giving the shape of a double hemispherical cup.<\/li>\n<li>The splitter divide the jet without shock into two parts moving sideways in opposite direction.<\/li>\n<li>The advantage of having double cup shaped buckets is that the axial thrust neutralizes each other.<\/li>\n<li>The buckets are shaped so that the jet gets deflected through 160\u00b0 \u2013 170\u00b0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Casing<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The casing of Pelton turbine has no hydraulic function to perform.
