The designer needs to be alert to those possible inconsistencies. As the Gruebler\u2019s criterion pays no attention to link sizes\u00a0 or shapes, it can\u00a0 give misleading\u00a0 results in the face of unique\u00a0 geometric\u00a0 configurations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>For example<\/em><\/strong>, Fig. (a) shows a structure (DOF = 0) with the ternary links of arbitrary shape. This link arrangement is sometimes called the \u201cE-quintet\u201d, because of its resemblance to a capital <em>E <\/em>and the fact that it has five links including the ground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1106 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/gruebler.jpg\" alt=\"Gruebler\" width=\"256\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fig. (b) shows the same <em>E<\/em>-quintet with the ternary links straight and parallel and with equispaced nodes. The three binary links are also equal in length. With this very unique geometry, you can see that it will move despite Gruebler\u2019s criterion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1107 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/geometry.jpg\" alt=\"geometry\" width=\"286\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fig. (c) shows a very common mechanism which also disobeys Gruebler\u2019s criterion. The joint between the two wheels can be postulated to allow no slip, provided that sufficient friction is available.
