{"id":1044,"date":"2024-07-08T16:14:55","date_gmt":"2024-07-08T10:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/?p=1044"},"modified":"2025-07-16T15:01:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T09:31:50","slug":"type-of-governors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.madeeasy.in\/study\/me\/theory-of-machines\/type-of-governors","title":{"rendered":"Type of Governors"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Centrifugal governors: <\/strong>Its action depends on the change of speed and centrifugal effect produced by the masses, known as governor balls, which rotate at a distance from the axis of rotation.<br \/>\nThe valve is operated by the actual change of engine speed in the case of centrifugal governors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Inertia Governors:<\/strong> The positions of the balls are affected by the forces set up by an angular acceleration or deceleration of the spindle, in addition to centrifugal forces on the balls.<br \/>\nIt is due to the rate of change of speed in case of inertia governors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Response of inertia governors is <strong>faster than<\/strong> that of centrifugal governors.<\/li>\n<li>In inertia governor, both forces i.e., centrifugal force and inertia force are in action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Types of Centrifugal Governor<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Pendulum type \u2014 Watt governor (simplest)<\/li>\n<li>Loaded type<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1046 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/study.madeeasy.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/load-type.jpg\" alt=\"Load Type\" width=\"433\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.madeeasy.in\/study\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/load-type.jpg 433w, https:\/\/www.madeeasy.in\/study\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/load-type-300x99.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Porter Governor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the sleeve of a Watt governor is loaded with a <strong>heavy mass<\/strong>, it becomes a Porter governor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let, <em>M<\/em> = Mass of the sleeve; However, if a governor is too sensitive, it may fluctuate<br \/>\ncontinuously. This phenomenon of this fluctuation is pronounced as hunting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Isochronism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A governor with sensitivity equal <strong>to infinity<\/strong> is treated as isochronous governor. For <strong>all position of sleeves<\/strong>, all\u00a0 governor has <strong>same<\/strong> speed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Stability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A governor is said to be stable if it brings the speed of the engine to the required value and there is <strong>not much<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>hunting<\/strong>. The ball masses, occupy a <strong>definite position<\/strong> for <strong>each speed<\/strong> of the engine within the <strong>working range<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe stability and the sensitivity are two opposite characteristics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Effort of Governor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The effort of the governor is the <strong>mean<\/strong> force acting on the sleeve to raise or lower it for a given <strong>change<\/strong> of <strong>speed<\/strong>. At constant speed, the governor is in <strong>equilibrium<\/strong> and the <strong>resultant<\/strong> force acting on the sleeve is zero. However, when the speed of the governor increases or decreases, a force is exerted on the sleeve which tends to move it.
